  1. Mulligan’s

    - Dive sports bar–nice TVs. Great $1 burger!

We had a really fun UVA alumni event at Mulligan’s on a Thursday evening. Well the Hoos beat the Canes, so it was meant to be fun night. Plus, it’s $1 burgers on a Thursday. Now these aren’t just typical nasty $1 burgers. This was a delicious burger. Cooked rare. Nice beef. #nom.

My only meh moment was the drafts. Just typical American beer. No fun belgian stuff. A Hoegaarden would have made that burger even better. Definitely will go again, though.

  2. Lady N’Awlins

    - Cute, low restaurant on Main, just begging for me to visit

    - Food Rating: 3

    - Fun Rating: 4.5

When you see Lady N’Awlins from the outside, it just says, “come eat here.” It lies really low, like almost beneath the sidewalk, with a super inviting, hole-in-the-all vibe. I met a friend for happy hour, which is 2 dollah drafts and 3 dollah rails ’til 8 pm, and 5 dollah apps until 7 pm. I grabbed the gator cakes from the appetizer menu. Meh. Not the wisest decision. Mealy.

BUT. I just wanted to like this restaurant so badly… which prompted me to order the jambalaya… which the bartender kindly gave me a small portion of for $5, even though that’s their tues night special, and I was there on a wed. (+1 point for kindness).

Now the jambalaya, that was hoppin. Just the right amount of spicy. Plus two tasty pieces of bread on the side (loves my carbs!). Along with a Sam Adams Seasonal, it was happy hour heaven.

In short–go on a Tuesday and grab ye a small portion of Jambalaya for $5. With the great atmosphere, it would make for a solid evening.

  3. Caliente

    - Spicy menu with lots of flavor and a fun shark hanging outside.

Caliente is most well-known for its stint on Man vs Food featuring its stupid wings. I did not try for the stupid wings… but I did have a tasty brunch on Saturday. Southwest pan scramble, delish. Also had a side of fried plantains, which were very good as well. The brunch menu is pretty extensive, with a lot of dishes including chili. It seems like a great richmond restaurant to go to if you’re fighting a headache from weekend shenanigans.

Plus, it’s right around the corner… for the win!

  4. Mama Zu’s

    - Hole in the wall cult hit.

    - Food Rating: 3

    - Feel Rating: 3.5

    - Fun Rating: 4

    -Price: $$$

View of the kitchen from the counter

I just have a soft spot in my heart for locally loved holes in the wall off the beaten path… I can’t help myself. This is exactly what Mama Zu’s is. You drive up to this richmond restaurant, spend 15 minutes finding a parking space on the street, and then you walk up to this bizarre looking run-down building. Inside the place is packed (we were there on a Saturday, mind you). We had to wait at the bar for 45 minutes, but we did order a delicious white pizza (secret menu item… score!).

The only thing is… the food. It was okay. I had veggie lasagna which was just fine. My co-diners had Osso Bucco, which was too peppery and just meh, and the whole fish barramundi, which was quite good.

I wanted to LOVE Mama Zu’s… but it just didn’t quite deliver.

  5. Can Can

    - Live Can Can in the middle of dinner… literally.

    - Price: $$$$

I drive by Can Can a lot on my way around town, and this richmond restaurant looks adorable. French Brasserie in the middle of Carytown? Darlin’! But price wise… this was not a place to go on my own dime. Enter: My Mother. In town for the weekend on her way to a conference in DC. Cha-ching! So when it came time to select a fine establishment for dinner, Can Can was the obvious choice.

We started with the beet salad, which was delish. I just loff beets! Then we had the tune tar tar and the moule frites with white wine sauce. The tuna was amazing, with melon and avocado in it as well. The moules were juicy, cooked just right. And the fries were great too.

Plus, the added bonus of a raucous Can Can in the middle of your meal. Literally three dancers leapt on top of the bar and started kickin’ their heels.

Redunkulous. I’ll be heading there again.
