  1. Mike and Anne’s- South Pasadena

    A Rosalie Does Pasadena Post!

Work sent me to California for a few weeks, so I’ll be reviewing some of my favorites in this neck of the woods!

    - Adorable garden and delicious brunch with an innovative menu, particularly the pancakes

    - Food Rating: 4.5

    - Fun Rating: 4.5

If one town does brunch right, it’s Pasadena. From Old Town to South Pasadena, there are simply some remarkable options. Mike and Anne’s is one of them. I went to brunch with my mom and we enjoyed the sparkling morning outside in the restaurant’s garden. After perusing the tasty looking menu, mt mom settled on Anne’s breakfast- two eggs, two pancakes and applewood smoked bacon. She chose the lemon ricotta pancakes, which were phenomenal. Served with blueberry compote, they taste like a light and fluffly version of lemon poppyseed muffins. They were delicious.

I ordered the red flannel hash, which is red and sweet potatoes, beets, onion and bacon, served with two eggs any style. It was, in a word, phenomenal. I absolutely adore beets, and I love sweet potatoes. The red flannel hash was breakfast heaven.

Also, our waiter was fantastic. When I ordered the hash, he double-checked that I liked beets, because it is very beety. I appreciated that! I mean, what if someone didn’t read carefully enough and then was unpleasantly surprised by the beets. He was polite and

  2. Umami- Los Angeles

    - There are no words. This is the best burger.

    - Food Rating: 4.75

    - Fun Rating: 4

    - Feel Rating: 3

I cannot articulate the deliciousness of an Umami Burger. It is the best burger I have ever had at a restaurant. I had a traditional Umami burger, cooked rare–shiitake mushroom, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, parmesan crisp and umami ketchup. The patty was thick, probably about an inch and a half, and it was insanely delicious. We had onion rings and truffle fries to go with it.

I won’t lie to you. This is the second time I’ve been to Umami Burger. The first time, I enjoyed the Truffle Burger, equally as much.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200, get thee to Umami Burger.

  3. International Food Blogger Conference- Los Angeles

    November 20, 2011 by Rosalie

Okay so,  as you’ve seen we’re moving the Blog to LA for a week or so. I will be reviewing some of the fantastic restaurants around here for a change!

But, to further confuse things, I’m briefly diverging from the restaurant posts to bring you some fun coverage of the International Food Blogger Conference, sponsored by Zephyr Adventures and Foodista. The PR agency I work for headed up media relations for the conference, so I was fortunate enough to attend!

I was able to enjoy a few sessions. Matt Armendariz’s session on food photography was fantastic. I am a complete novice, and I left with a much better understanding of the importance of lighting… and white foam core! Matt can’t live with out his handy piece of foam core for fill. It makes such a difference.

In addition, two of my fantastic colleagues presented on how Bloggers and PR people can work together, an evergreen topic. From a public relations perspective, it was interesting to see that many food bloggers have trouble understanding our goals. As PR folks, it’s our job to spread the word about our clients. For instance, say I represent Bing cherries. I pitch you a story about cherry pies for the holidays and I offer you some cherries if you’d like to make the pie for the holidays and blog about it. Well, you don’t like pie… but you do like cherry relish with your turkey. As a PR person, I’d LOVE to hear that. And, odds are, I would be happy to send you cherries for your relish, for you to blog about your recipe!

A good PR person wants to work with you to make a story that you like for your blog. The next time we pitch you, take a moment to think about how you can work with us. I know we’d love to work with you! As PR people, our goal is to make it as simple as possible to for you to write good content for your blog.

On the flip side, PR people need to be sure that they are easy to work with! Treat bloggers with respect and provide them with the images and product that they need. Our panel had a unique perspective, because one of my colleagues has a fantastic food blog of her own, Top of the Apple.

I also really enjoyed Michael Moore’s dinner on Saturday evening. His deconstructed beef chili was to die for. And, he had to cook it in the Doubletree’s kitchen, without his staff. Incredible. Dessert was pretty spectacular too!

  4. Bottega Louie- Los Angeles

    - The absolute best downtown.

I love Bottega Louie. The high ceilings and marble floors evoke the Plaza Hotel in NY for me, remembering back to when I was young. I doubt it resembles the Plaza at all, but for some reason I get that feel. Bottega Louie just looks decadent.

The food is fantastic. The truffle fries should not be missed. For a twenty-something on a financial plan that vaguely resembles a budget, the pizzas area also a delicious square deal. For those looking for something a bit more decadant, the lamb porterhouse is fantastic.

As long as you can handle the noise… and it is loud in there… you will have an evening you can’t beat.

  5. Mulligan’s

    - Dive sports bar–nice TVs. Great $1 burger!

    - Food Rating: 3.5

We had a really fun UVA alumni event at Mulligan’s on a Thursday evening. Well the Hoos beat the Canes, so it was meant to be fun night. Plus, it’s $1 burgers on a Thursday. Now these aren’t just typical nasty $1 burgers. This was a delicious burger. Cooked rare. Nice beef. #nom.

My only meh moment was the drafts. Just typical American beer. No fun belgian stuff. A Hoegaarden would have made that burger even better. Definitely will go again, though.

  6. Café Caturra

    -       Are you a wine bar, or not?

    -       Food rating 3

    -       Feel rating 3

    -       Fun rating 2

    -       Price: $

Café Caturra is simply having an identity crisis. It’s like Panera, you go up and order your food… only they serve wine too. But the food is lunch food. So unless you’re a total wino, and drinking with lunch, it’s rather confusing.

We went to this richmond restaurant for dinner. I had a nice French chardonnay, buttery and good. I had a pick two—the chicken salad sandwich and walnut raspberry salad. It was a great meal… for lunch. Unless you feel like meat balls or sliders, there isn’t much on the menu for dinner.

It was really nice inside. There was a roaring fire, lighting was spot on. All in all a nice, experience—I’d go back for lunch in a second.

    Best part. The price. CHEAP!

  7. Can Can

    October 16, 2011 by Rosalie

    - Live Can Can in the middle of dinner… literally.

    - Food Rating: 4

    - Fun Rating: 4

    - Feel Rating: 3.5

    - Price: $$$$

I drive by Can Can a lot on my way around town, and this richmond restaurant looks adorable. French Brasserie in the middle of Carytown? Darlin’! But price wise… this was not a place to go on my own dime. Enter: My Mother. In town for the weekend on her way to a conference in DC. Cha-ching! So when it came time to select a fine establishment for dinner, Can Can was the obvious choice.

We started with the beet salad, which was delish. I just loff beets! Then we had the tune tar tar and the moule frites with white wine sauce. The tuna was amazing, with melon and avocado in it as well. The moules were juicy, cooked just right. And the fries were great too.

Plus, the added bonus of a raucous Can Can in the middle of your meal. Literally three dancers leapt on top of the bar and started kickin’ their heels.

Redunkulous. I’ll be heading there again.
